Sustainability important

“Sustainability is not a choice for us, it is woven into our culture and being practiced over decades”

  • Ghosh’s admiration for nature is unparallel, he believes that nature can be the best friend of designers hence most of his designs has that impression. Maintaining environmental and product safety measures is an integral part of production practices.

  • In today’s World where resource is limited it becomes a priority for everyone to use resources carefully and preserve them for future generations. Hence the brand practice of controlling its operational footprints by using recycled materials like Recycled zippers which are made from ocean waste plastic and brass, and sourcing leathers responsibly from LWG-certified tanneries which means while making the leather all environmental standards have been followed properly, using vegetable-tanned leather, FSC-certified packaging materials will help in reducing environmental impact.

  • RECYCLED ZIPPERS- It’s an oath taken by the brand that 95% of the zippers used in the atelier are recycled zippers and most importantly these zippers are manufactured from recycled ocean waste plastic, recycled copper, recycled zinc, recycled polyester, and all the materials and its processing steps/ activities are inspected and passed through Global Recycled Standard (GRS)- VERSION 4.0

  • SOURCING LEATHER FRM LWG CERTIFIED TANNERIES- Sourcing of Leather is an integral part of production. 90% of the leather is procured from LWG-certified tanneries, LWG stands for Environmental standards for leather production which means all the leather tanneries are well maintained, have good working conditions, and reduce their carbon footprints by not using any health hazardous chemical substances.

  • VEGETABLE TANNED LEATHER- It’s an alternative tanning process and very oldest technique of leather tanning done by using natural vegetable and plant-based tannins which means that leather is not treated with harmful chemicals and doesn’t have any top synthetic coating. This kind of leather is easily decomposable in natural leather leaving behind less carbon footprint compared to Chrome-tanned leather.

  • FSC CERTIFIED PACKING ITEMS- At SAURAV GHOSH all the packaging items are Forest Stewardship Council certified, which promotes responsible forest management worldwide. All FSC-certified items guarantee the material has come from responsively managed forests, where Biodiversity is maintained and protected.

This particular initiative not only supports recycling but also helps in creating job opportunities in the handicraft sector.

  • All the show fittings are made up of waste and discarded brass scraps from different industries. It’s an initiative that has been followed from the initial day of the brand.

Map of Bengal and the pictures represent people from different communities, cultures, religions and nationalities who came to Calcutta and influenced the culture of the city and making it the ‘Cultural Capital of India”

The word Cacophony means a disharmonized mixture of sounds, which really goes well with Calcutta. Looking at Calcutta on a broader aspect, it’s an amalgamation of people from different cultures, nationalities, and groups which can be witnessed in every street and corner, each comes with different opinions, tastes, habiliments, and cultural practices but still sounds one. Likewise, this collection draws inspiration from different crafts, cultures, and art forms that come from different places with distinct aesthetics which creates creative chaos but still makes it inclusive like this city and its people.

The collection draws inspiration from crafts like Ason making (embroidered sitting matt) Mughal Miniature paintings, Kalighat Painting (Bengal school of art), gilding (Indo-Persian techniques), and jewelry making which is artfully combined with leather crafts and turned into highly creative products. the project reveals full-flavored traditional handcrafted artwork and fine craftsmanship with a modern approach. Mixing old traditional art with the new, with reinvention is the key feature of the collection.

CRAFT CULTURE OF BENGAL

From the geographical point of view the nature and political boundaries of the land in which the culture of Bengal, its crafts, languages, and religion and their influences are felt. Cover mountains, valleys, plains, deltas, etc. physical causes have led to the development of different types of art and crafts in Bengal. Bengal, India is also known as the heartland of Handicrafts and today it is a source of generating income for many households, especially in the rural sector. More than 5000 different types of crafts are been practiced by both men and women. Women mostly practice embroidery, wall paintings, etc. whereas men practice wood carvings and terracotta pottery making.

BENGAL CRAFT AND SUSTAINABILITY

As per the internet, Sustainability means to maintain a process continuously over time. Sustainability is a serious concern in today’s fashion industry whether it is sourcing raw materials or production processes all brands are inclining towards it. Exemplar crafts like Kantha (making embroidery on quilts by pulling out threads from old clothes), and Dokra ( Metal casting using lost wax techniques process, majorly old brass is recycled in this technique) is perfect examples of sustainability and practiced over the past few thousand years, as a designer one needs to think a step further by combining these art forms with fashion and converting into a value-added product for the fashion market because sustainability is not just about maintaining a certain process its also about optimum utilization of resources.

It’s difficult to define Bengali culture through a few colors because it’s an amalgamation of several various heritage cultures, and traditions but still looks united which is an important and incredible part of Indian culture.

Palate of bright and natural hues is inspired by old embroidered pieces, antique textiles, Blackened hookah (tobacco pipe), enameled bowls, gilded vermillion boxes, rose water sprinklers, ivory jewelry boxes, lampshades, Mughal miniature paintings, Bengal School of Art, etc. set the mood and color pallet for the collection
